UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After suffering a pair of losses last weekend in the City of Brotherly Love, the University of Richmond women's basketball team hopes to find the city more hospitable on their return for Sunday's match-up with Saint Joseph's. The Spiders and Hawks face off at 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WXGI-AM 950.
Richmond (13-6, 5-3) is coming off two consecutive losses, its first of the season, after falling to Temple in overtime on Friday night and dropping a three-point decision to La La Salle on Sunday. Junior Kate Flavin is the current Atlantic 10 Player of the Week, her league-leading third honor, after back-to-back double-doubles against Duquesne and Temple.
Saint Joseph's (11-6, 6-1) has also lost their last two contests, falling to Temple in overtime on Sunday afternoon and suffering an 80-44 loss to #5/6 Penn State on Thursday night. Senior Stephanie Graff leads the Hawks in both scoring and rebounding (12.4 ppg and 6.8 rpg).
GAME NOTES
The Series
Today's contest marks the fifth meeting between the schools with the series tied at two wins each. The teams first met on December 29, 1987 in the Championship game of the UR Dole Pineapple Classic when the Spiders claimed a 59-49 win. In Richmond's two years of Atlantic 10 competition, the Hawks have won both regular season contests. Last year, Richmond defeated Saint Joseph's 56-53 in the second round of the WNIT. The Spiders are 1-1 at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse, the site of this year's Atlantic 10 Championship.
The Coaches
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her second year on the sidelines and owns a 34-17 record. She has a 1-1 record against the Hawks. Saint Joseph's head coach Cindy Griffin is in her third year with the Hawks and has compiled a 54-25 mark during that time. She owns a career record of 105-58 with an additional three years at Loyola.
Last Meeting
Richmond's Kate Flavin recorded a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds.
The Dynamic Duo
Either Kate Flavin or Saona Chapman lead the Spiders in eight of nine statistical catagories. Chapman ranks first in assists and three-point field goal percentage and ties for Flavin in minutes per game while Flavin leads the team in points, field goal percentage, rebounds, steals, blocks and ties for minutes played. In addition, one of the duo has been the high scorer in 17 of the 19 games. The pair has scored over 40% of Richmond's points in 14 games this year with a high of 64% against La Salle (1/25).
Richmond's Record When ...
Even when the Spiders have committed more turnovers than their opponents, they have won seven contests and only lost one. Richmond has won all seven games when its opponents shoot under 40%. When the Spiders outrebound their opponents, they have won nine of ten games.
