KINGSTON, R.I. - The University of Rhode Island women's soccer team used two second half goals to defeat University of Richmond 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at URI Soccer Complex. The Rams improved to 6-6-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the Atlantic 10, while the Spiders dropped to 5-5-1, 3-2-0 in the conference.
"This was a disappointing loss," Richmond head coach Peter Albright commented. "We had numerous breakaway situations in the first half but could not score. In the second half, they took advantage of our mistakes and were able to earn the win."
Claire Landon broke the scoreless tie 9:04 into the second half with her second goal of the season on an assist from senior Kelly McTurk off of a corner kick.
Just over two minutes later, Lauren Forgione scored off assists from freshman Thorunn Helga Jonsdottir and junior Megan Kasparek for a 2-0 lead.
Richmond took 16 shots to the Rams' seven but were unable to put the ball in the net. Senior Whitney Sikes led the Spiders with five attempts.
Junior goalkeeper Kelly Kolker played the entire game for the Spiders and made one save. For the Rams, Ria Carroll earned the win in goal holding Richmond scoreless in 82 minutes of action with six saves.
