VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Current University of Richmond volunteer assistant track & field coach, and former track and cross country standout Kevin Rhue continues his winning ways. The Virginia Beach, Va., native won the 22nd Annual Beach Ford All-American 5K Run in Virginia Beach, Va., with a time of 14:52, Oct. 16.
Rhue's performance marks the first time since 1992 that an athlete has run under 15:00 on a certified 5K race course in Virginia Beach. For his victory he earns free use for one month of a 2005 Ford Taurus, compliments of Beach Ford.
Rhue ran alone throughout the entire race defeating second place Nick Berra (16:38) by nearly 2 minutes. Covering the first mile in 4:35, he continued to expand his lead. With a two mile split of 9:32, he cruised through the three mile mark in 14:20 and finished the 5K event in 14:52.
"I felt good throughout," Rhue said. "When the gun went off I took off strong, but under control. With 1K to go I realized I had a good chance to run under 15 minutes so I dug down and forced myself to run harder, at that point I was starting to feel the race."
"We are proud to host the Beach Ford All American Run," Beach Ford's Bob Barton said. "This event is held each year at Kingston Elementary School, and money raised by the race is given to the school. Since 1982, Tom Barton and the Kingston PTA have sponsored the Beach Ford All American Run. Much appreciated help and participation by the Tidewater Striders is given each year."
