UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Three Richmond student-athletes were recognized by the Atlantic 10 Conference today as a result of their play in last week's competition in Cross Country and Field Hockey.
Sophomore Amanda Russell was selected as the Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week for the third consecutive week. Sophomore John Ciccarelli picked up his second Atlantic Weekly accolade as the Men's Cross Country Performer of the Week, and junior goalkeeper Michelle Swartz earned Co-Player of the Week recognition in field hockey.
Russell (North Bay, Ontario), who now has three consecutive A-10 Performer of the Week honors, finished atop the individual results at the Maymont Cross Country Festival in Richmond, Va., Friday evening. Her winning time of 17:23.0 broke her own meet record of 19:09.0 set in last year's event. She also set a personal season-best by knocking more than a minute from her previous top 5K time of 18:33.4. Russell led eight Richmond runners in the event's Top-10, helping the Spiders finish with the team title and a perfect score of 15 points.
Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.), who was named the A-10 Performer of the Week Sept. 20, finished first in the 8K event at the Maymont Cross Country Festival Friday in Richmond, Va. Ciccarelli's time of 24:50.0 broke the previous meet record (26:44.0) set in 2003 by Radford's Norman Gava. He finished almost a minute in front of second place and helped the Spiders pick up their first team title in 2004.
Swartz (Severna Park, Md.) recorded her fifth shutout of the season as the Spiders topped Princeton, 1-0, Sunday afternoon. Swartz has not allowed a goal in more than 175 minutes, making 11 in the period of time. The last goal converted on her occurred in the first half against No. 8 Old Dominion (L, 0-2). Swartz, who has a goals-against average of 0.90, is currently on pace to break her own single-season mark at Richmond set last season. She currently ranks fourth on Richmond's all-time single-season save percentage list (.809).
