UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond cross country teams will compete for an opportunity to run at the NCAA Championships this Saturday during the NCAA Southeast Regionals. The Spiders, who have had the last week off from competition after running at the Atlantic 10 Championships, will travel to Greenville, N.C., to compete in one of eight regional championships around the country.
The Spiders' female team will kickoff the action with a 6K race which begins at 11 a.m. at Overton's Lake Kristi cross country course. The men will compete in the 10K race set to start at 12:15 p.m.
Sophomore John Ciccarelli, who was the first-ever Richmond runner to win the individual A-10 title, leads the men's team into the NCAA competition. Ciccarelli ran his latest 8K race in 25:30.0, almost a minutes slower than his best time of 24:37.0 at the Paul Short Invitational. The sophomore has led the Spiders in all six of their competitions this season, including four Top-5 finishes. Ciccarelli, a native of South Bury, Conn., recorded his worst finish of 18th at the Paul Short Invit., the same race he ran his season-best 8K time.
The women's team, which finished just 26 points out of first at the A-10 meet, is paced by sophomore Amanda Russell. Russell, who placed third at the Atlantic 10 race to earn All-Conference honors, ran her best 6K time (21:39.4) at the Paul Short Invit., to place 25th overall. Since that race she has placed in the Top-3 of each 5K race she has ran and led Richmond with a 61st-place finish at the Pre-National 6K competition (21:49.6).
