Spider Cross Country Teams Compete At NCAA Regionals

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Richmond cross country teams finished among the Top-20 in both the men's 10K and women's 6K competitions at the NCAA Southeast Regionals Saturday at Overton's Lake Kristi course in Greenville, N.C.
The Spider women, led by sophomore Amanda Russell's 22nd-place finish, finished 11th out of 25 teams with a total of 356 points. Richmond's men earned a total of 513 points to finish 18th among 29 teams.
Duke garnered 71 points to take home the title in the women's 6K race, while North Carolina State (75 points) finished second to qualify along with the Blue Devils for next week's NCAA Championships. North Carolina rounded out the Top-3 in the women's meet with 80 points.
In the men's 10K, North Carolina State and William and Mary finished one-two, respectively, to garner the automatic bids into the NCAA Championships. Clemson finished third, four points out of second place.
Sophomore Amanda Russell's led the Spiders with a 22nd-place finish. Her time of 20:58.7 was easily her best 6K time in 2004, eclipsing her previous best of 21:39.4 by more than 40 seconds. Junior Nicole Kurtain finished second for the Spiders and 65th overall with a time of 22:09.8. Freshman Shelby Faircloth was the third Richmond female to cross the line, garnering a time of 22:29.1 and 84th place overall. Faircloth's time was also a season-best in the 6K distance.
Sophomore John Ciccarelli once again turned in a solid performance on the men's side. The South Bury, Conn., native finished 15th overall with a time of 30:39.1, setting a career best that is 1:49 faster than his time in 2003. Freshman Peter Norquist finished his first 10K collegiate race in 32:54.0 for 112th place, second-best for the Spiders. Senior Pat Barkhuff finished out the Top-3 for Richmond in 123rd place in a time of 33:06.4

Richmond will now await Monday's announcement by the NCAA for the at-large team and individual bids to compete in the NCAA Championships, Nov. 22 in Terre Haute, Ind.
