UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) scored a career-high 33 points, including 25 in the first half, to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to 91-71 win over Southwest Missouri State tonight at the Robins Center. The Spiders start off the season with a 1-0 mark and the Bears fall to 0-1.
In addition to her points, Flavin recorded eight rebounds and a game-high five steals in addition to connecting on a career-best 11 free throws. Sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) also reached a career-best in points with 19 while grabbing seven rebounds. All ten Richmond players scored in the win.
"Our depth helped us tremendously tonight," commented Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle. "The young kids gave us good minutes. We wanted to apply (perimeter) pressure because they shoot the three so well. There is no way that six kids could have applied that kind of pressure for 40 minutes."
Three SMS players reached double-figures in the scoring column with senior K.C. Cowgill leading the team with 16.
Flavin tallied nine of Richmond's first 11 points as the Spiders held an 11-7 lead at the first media timeout. The Bears hit one of their nine three-point baskets at the 14:24 mark to take their only lead of the contest. The score was even at 15-15 after both teams converted on fast-break lay-ups after steals but the Spiders tallied 13 unanswered points and held a 28-15 advantage with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.
In a seven minute span, the Bears scored just three points as Richmond built a 20-point lead. The Spiders held their largest lead of the half (22) at the break with a halftime score of 51-28. Richmond shot .636 percent from the field in the first period.
In second half action, the Bears would get no closer than 17 points and the Spiders built as much as a 25 point lead before the final was set at 91-71.
Richmond dominated in the paint, scoring 48 points to the Bears' 20, and scored 31 points as a result of SMS's 25 turnovers.
The Spiders play at Liberty on Tuesday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the internet at www.richmondspiders.com.
