Women's Basketball Faces Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team faces in-state rival Virginia for the first time in three years on Saturday night at University Hall in Charlottesville. The game, with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off, will be broadcast live on Sportsradio 910 AM and via the internet at www.richmondspiders.com.
The Spiders (2-0) are coming off a pair of 20-point wins with a season-opening 91-71 victory over Southwest Missouri State (11/20) and Tuesday night's 65-45 win against Liberty. Richmond's two A-10 preseason first team honorees have led the team in scoring with senior Kate Flavin recording a career-high 33 points against SMS and junior Saona Chapman scoring 24 points against the Flames.
In the latest national rankings (11/22), the Spiders received five votes in the AP Poll and 13 votes in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll.
Virginia (3-1) also played on Tuesday night, defeating Delaware State 74-47. The Cavaliers are led by senior Brandi Turner who is averaging 16.5 ppg and 9.0 rpg.
GAME NOTES
THE SERIES
The teams are meeting for the 11th time with the Cavaliers holding a 9-1 advantage in the series. In the last meeting, on November 19, 2001, the Spiders recorded their only win against Virginia with a 77-72 victory in Richmond. Richmond has a 0-4 record at University Hall.
THE COACHES
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her third year with the Spiders and has posted a 46-21 record during that time. Boyle has a 0-0 record against Virginia. Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan is in her 28th year at Virginia and has compiled a 594-241 mark and led the Cavaliers to 20 NCAA Tournaments.
LAST TIME OUT
The Spiders defeated Liberty 65-45 on Tuesday night in Lynchburg. Junior Saona Chapman led all scorers with 24 points off a career-best six three-point baskets. For the second consecutive game, Richmond shot over .500 from the field.
