UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider men's basketball team puts an unbeaten record on the line at 1 p.m. on Sunday when it travels to Charlottesville to face undefeated Virginia in University Hall.
After defeating Elon in the home opener on Friday night, the 2-0 Spiders travel to a place they haven't won since 1968. The Cavaliers (3-0) lead the all-time series 49-36.
Sunday's contest will be televised on Comcast SportsNet in Richmond.
STORYLINES
*Richmond is 14-29 in Charlottesville. The last time these two played at UVA was Jan. 30, 1997 - an 83-66 Cavalier win. The Spiders haven't won in Charlottesville since Jan. 3, 1968 (102-95).
*The last time these two met was Dec. 21, 1999 when Virginia left the Robins Center with a 69-65 victory. Richmond led 38-31 at halftime. more on page 2
*Virginia is Richmond's oldest series of the 2004-05 opponents. The rivalry dates back to Jan. 20, 1915 when the Cavaliers captured their largest margin of victory in the series (45 points - 59-14).
*The Spiders are 110-207 (.347) all-time against current ACC members, 0-2 during Jerry Wainwright's tenure. Both losses came against Wake Forest who the Spiders face on Dec. 4 in Winston-Salem.
*Kevin Steenberge's 51 points is the most in back-to-back contests by a Richmond player since Reggie Brown netted 57 in 2001. Brown scored 27 against SW Miss. St. (Dec. 22) and 30 against VMI (Dec. 28).
*The Spiders shot over 60.0 percent (60.8) against Elon, the first time they reached that mark since shooting 64.3 percent against St. Bonaventure on March 7, 2002 in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.
