Spiders' Rally Not Enough at Davidson
02/19/2026 | Men's Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Spiders stormed back from a 16-point deficit to take the lead before letting the Wildcats escape late in a 65-63 loss at Davidson Wednesday. The outcome was in doubt until the final buzzer, as Richmond missed a pair of potential game-tying shots in the paint just before the horn.
Richmond thought it had tied the game 10 seconds earlier, when Aiden Argabright hit a long contested jumpshot in front of the Spiders bench. But an official review ruled that Argabright's toe was on the line, making the score 64-63 Davidson instead of a 64-64 tie.
A Richmond foul sent Davidson to the free throw line, where AJ Lopez snatched a Wildcats miss on their second attempt and sprinted to the basket. Lopez lofted a scoop shot high off the glass but it came down outside the cylinder and Jaden Daughtry's putback attempt came up short at the buzzer.
The loss dropped Richmond to 14-13 overall this season and 4-10 in Atlantic 10 play.
Argabright led Richmond with 16 points, shooting 5-7 from the field and 6-7 from the foul line. Lopez added 15 points and registered three of Richmond's four steals.
Mike Walz led the Spiders in rebounds, with seven, and assists, with five.
There was little early indication that the game would come down to the final play, as the Wildcats built a 34-18 lead over the game's opening 18 minutes. But Will Johnston hit a pair of three-pointers in the final two minutes of the half, allowing Richmond to trim its deficit to 35-24 at the break.
UR continued to hit from deep at the beginning of the second half, as the Spiders went 5-6 from three-point range over the first four minutes of the period to narrow their gap to two at 41-39.
With 14:13 remaining, Richmond took its first lead since 10-9 when Tyne came up with a steal and found a streaking Lopez for a dunk to put Richmond ahead 43-41.
Davidson regained control, and a bucket in the post by Josh Scovens put the Wildcats ahead 62-54 with 1:50 to play. But Lopez and Argabright led Richmond on a 9-3 run to give the Spiders a chance to tie the game at the buzzer.
Lopez and Argabright combined for Richmond's final 14 points, but Richmond's guards couldn't match up with a sizable Davidson frontcourt. With UR thin in the post — backup center Jonathan Beagle missed the game with an injured finger — Davidson outrebounded UR 45-30 and built an 18-8 edge in second-chance points.
The Wildcats also held UR to 14-36 (39%) on two-point field goals, lower than the 41% Richmond shot from three-point range (9-22).
Davidson has now won five straight in the series after UR won four in a row vs the Wildcats from 2022 to 2024.
Next up for the Spiders is a White Out Senior Night game vs St. Bonaventure Saturday in the Robins Center at 6 PM. The broadcast will air on ESPN Plus and locally on Richmond's CBS affiliate, WTVR (channel 6). Jonathan Beagle, Will Johnston, AJ Lopez, Apostolos Roumoglou, and Mike Walz will be honored in a pre-game ceremony beginning at 5:45 PM.
