AMHERST, Mass. - Senior Whitney Sikes (Charlotte, N.C) tallied her third goal of the season to lead the University of Richmond women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Massachusetts today in the opening round of the Atlantic 10 Championships. The third-seeded Spiders improve to 10-7-1 while the #6 Minutewomen end their season with a 7-11-0 mark. Richmond faces second-seeded Rhode Island on Friday, November 5 at 1:00 p.m. in quarterfinal action.
Sikes sent a low, line-drive shot towards the right corner that beat Massachusetts goalkeeper Kristine Walker in the fifth minute of play for the only score of the game. Senior Olina Vidarsdottir (Grindavik, Iceland) assisted on the score.
Both teams battled for possession throughout the remainder of the match but neither could capitalize on any offensive plays. Massachusetts outshot the Spiders 15-11.
