UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - With double-doubles from senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) and junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.), the University of Richmond women's basketball team defeated Georgetown 62-50 tonight at the Robins Center. The Spiders improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 1996-97 season while the Hoyas fall to 1-3.
For the second consecutive game, the Spiders were behind at the half after shooting just .313 percent in the opening period.
"I am thankful for the win but disappointed in our team because their focus was not there tonight," commented Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle. "We are relying on Saona too much and need to have a leader from our post positions."
Flavin led all scorers with 21 points and added ten rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Chapman tallied 19 points and added ten assists for just her second career double-double.
The Hoyas were led by senior Mary Lisicky's 15 points, including a trio of three-point baskets.
The Spiders held an early 16-8 lead but hit just two field goals during a seven minute stretch and the Hoyas took their first lead of the game at the 4:37 point off a lay-up from sophomore Amber Dorsey. Richmond missed 12 of 14 shots during that span.
Georgetown took as much as a three-point lead during the remainder of the half before the Spiders hit the last shot of the period to get within one point (27-26) at the break.
The Spiders opened the second half with a free throw from Flavin that tied the score at 27 and Araceli Gil's (Santa Barbara, Calif.) three-point basket as the shot clock expired gave Richmond a 38-33 edge with just over 15 minutes left.
Georgetown answered back with seven straight points to retake the lead two minutes later and the teams stayed even for the following eight minutes of play.
The Spiders reestablished the lead with 5:09 on the clock off a Flavin lay-up that put the score at 50-49 and held a four-point advantage after a fast-break lay-up from sophomore DeUnna Hendrix (Kokomo, Ind.).
Gerogetown scored just one more point in the final three and half minutes and the Spiders took the 62-50 win.
The Spiders shot a season-low .414 from the field but dished out a season-high 17 assists.
Richmond is back in action on Sunday afternoon when they face cross-town rival VCU at 2:00 p.m. at the Siegel Center.
