UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team is looking to continue its winning ways on Wednesday when the Howard Bison visit the Robins Center for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The game will be broadcast live on WRNL 910 AM and via the internet at www.richmondspiders.com.
The Spiders (5-0) are returning to the court for the first time since defeating cross-town rival VCU on December 5 after a ten-day break for final exams. Senior Kate Flavin is leading the team in both scoring and rebounding and currently ranks 11th in the nation in field goal percentage (.644).
Of 324 Division I women's basketball programs, Richmond is one of just 13 that remains unbeaten. The Spiders are receiving votes in both polls, earning 22 in the USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Coaches Poll and 16 in the AP Poll.
Howard (5-1) is coming off its first loss of the season, dropping a 70-57 decision to Drexel. Bison head coach Cathy Parson is familiar with the Robins Center as she served as the associate head coach for the Spiders during the 1999-00 season. Current Richmond assistant coach Kim Hairston was a member of that squad and reunited with Parson as an assistant at Howard for the 2001-02 season.
GAME NOTES
THE SERIES
The teams are meeting for just the third time with the Spiders holding a 2-0 advantage in the series. Richmond claimed an 87-56 win in the first meeting on December 8, 1992 before pulling out a 61-60 win on November 26, 1993.
THE COACHES
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her third year with the Spiders and has posted a 49-21 mark during that time. She has never faced Howard. Cathy Parson is in her fourth year with the Bison and has compiled a 68-55 mark during that time. She owns a career record of 251-138 after a ten-year stint at Christopher Newport. Parson served as an associate head coach at Richmond for one year (1999-2000).
LAST TIME OUT
The Spiders stayed undefeated with a 76-67 victory over cross-town rival VCU on Sunday, December 5. Three players scored in double-figures for the Spiders as Richmond saw a halftime lead of ten reduced to just one in the second half before holding on for the win.
RICHMOND AGAINST THE MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (MEAC)
The Spiders have an all-time record of 15-12 against members of the MEAC. In addition to Howard, Richmond has played Coppin State (2-0), Delaware State (3-0), Hampton (3-11), Howard (2-0), Maryland ES (1-0), Morgan State (4-0) and Norfolk State (0-1).
PERFECT RECORD
Richmond is currently the only Atlantic 10 conference school to still remain undefeated and one of just 13 of 324 Division I schools with a unblemished record (as of 12/13). With their win over VCU (12/5), the Spiders improved to a 5-0 record for the best opener since the 1970-71 season. In 1970-71, Richmond won 13 straight games and ended the season without a loss.
