UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - All 12 University of Richmond women's basketball players scored tonight as the Spiders defeated Howard University 101-57 at the Robins Center. With the win, Richmond stays undefeated with a 6-0 mark while the Bison suffer their second consecutive loss and fall to 5-2.
"Tonight was a great opportunity to mix it up and try new line-ups," commented Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle. "We were also finally able to put two complete halves together. The only part of this game that I am disappointed in is our free throw shooting."
In just 20 minutes of play, senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) led the Spiders with 20 points and was one rebound shy of her third straight double-double with nine rebounds. Junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) tallied 15 points and classmate Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored a season-high 12 points. Sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) rounded out the Spiders' double-figure scorers with 14 points.
Senior Daisha Hicks was the only Howard player in double-digits with 17 points while ten other Bison players were listed in the scoring column.
After Howard tied the game at 2-2 with less than a minute gone by in the contest, the Spiders held a double-digit lead from the 15:59 mark and on. Richmond connected on seven of its first nine field goal attempts and the Bison did not reach double-figures on the scoreboard until the 8:23 point in the first half.
The Spiders held their largest lead of the half at the break, taking a 31-point advantage (56-25) into the locker room.
In second half action, Richmond built as much as a 46-point lead.
This marks the first time since February 17, 2002 that the Spiders have scored 100 points.
The Spiders shot a season-high .627 (37-59) from the field and dished out a season-best 23 assists. However, they struggled at the free throw line, hitting only 24 of their 42 (.571) free throw attempts.
Richmond dominated in the paint, scoring 48 points to Howard's 18.
The Spiders host Sacred Heart on Saturday, December 18 at 2:00 p.m.
