PHILADELPHIA – Maggie Doogan scored 35 points in front of a hometown crowd as the University of Richmond women's basketball team concluded the regular season with a 72-61 win at Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon. With the win, Richmond closed the regular season at 25-6 overall and 15-3 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Hawks finish 19-10 overall and 10-8 in league action.

How It Happened
SJU opened the game with a layup before Maggie Doogan answered on the other end to tie the game at two. Ally Sweeney scored her first points on a layup before the Hawks responded with a triple. After another Doogan layup, SJU used a 4-0 spurt to take a 9-6 lead, but Rachel Ullstrom tied the game at nine with a three pointer. The Hawks reclaimed the lead with back-to-back buckets to go up 13-9 before Tierra Simon knocked down a jumper late in the quarter as the Spiders trailed 13-11 after the first 10 minutes.

The teams exchanged a pair of free throws to open the second quarter before the Hawks added a layup to extend the lead to 17-13. Ullstrom hit one at the line to spark a 7-0 Richmond run as Doogan and Rayne Wright drained back-to-back triples to give UR a 20-17 advantage. Two Saint Joseph's free throws trimmed the margin to one, 20-19, but Doogan answered with another three pointer at the 2:39 mark for her 12th point of the game. The Hawks responded from deep, but Doogan countered with a jumper to ignite a 5-0 burst as Wright and Simon each scored to send Richmond into halftime with a 28-22 lead.

Sweeney opened the third quarter with a layup before SJU answered on the other end. Doogan completed an and-one play to push her total to 17 as Richmond built a 33-24 lead at the 8:02 mark. Sweeney later connected from deep to keep the momentum going before the Hawks capitalized at the free throw line to cut the deficit to 36-26. Ullstrom added a three pointer and the teams traded baskets before Saint Joseph's trimmed the margin to nine, 41-32, at the stripe. Doogan answered with two free throws of her own. After a brief exchange, Dewey and Doogan combined for four points to stretch the lead to 49-35. A 4-0 Hawk run cut it to 10, 49-39, but Doogan closed the quarter with two more free throws as Richmond led 51-39 entering the final period.

SJU opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back triples to cut the lead to 51-45. Doogan responded with another three-point play before the Hawks answered with a jumper. After the teams traded three pointers, Sweeney knocked down a jumper to push the margin to 62-50 with 5:02 remaining. Two more Saint Joseph's triples cut the lead to 62-56 before Simon ended the run with a layup. Doogan converted two free throws and Wright added a layup to extend the lead to 68-56. The Hawks hit another three pointer before Doogan again went 2-for-2 at the line to make it 70-59. Saint Joseph's added a late jumper, but Doogan sealed the 72-61 win with two final free throws.

Notes on the Game

Maggie Doogan led the Spiders with 35 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including three three pointers, and went a career-high 14-for-14 (tied for 14th-highest in program history in a single game) at the free throw line. She added five rebounds and four assists. The performance marked her fourth 30-point game of the season.
Ally Sweeney finished with 12 points, three rebounds, four assists and a steal for her 18th double-figure scoring game of the year.
Rachel Ullstrom and Alicia Newell pulled down five rebounds apiece and recorded one block each. Tierra Simon added the Spiders' third block.
Richmond shot 24-of-50 from the field, 8-of-22 from three point range and 16-of-18 at the free throw line. The Spiders grabbed 29 rebounds, assisted on 19 of 24 made field goals, recorded five steals, scored 28 points in the paint and converted 15 points off 13 Hawk turnovers.
The game featured three ties and five lead changes.
The Spiders improve to 13-18 all-time against Saint Joseph's and have now won three straight road games against the Hawks.
Richmond finishes the regular season 25-6 overall and 15-3 in A-10 play, including a 13-1 home record, 9-4 road mark and 3-1 neutral site record. The Spiders own three Quad 2 wins, four Quad 3 wins and a 17-1 mark in Quad 4 games entering the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Richmond has secured the No. 3 seed in the A-10 Tournament, marking its third consecutive top three finish in the conference standings.
The Spiders outscored opponents 73.6-59.2 in the regular season, holding teams to 38.8 percent shooting and 28.8 percent from 3-point range.
