GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) scored a lay-up with 2.2 seconds remaining in double-overtime to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 79-77 victory over Florida this afternoon at the O'Connell Center. With the win, the Spiders remain undefeated at 8-0 while the Gators fall to 6-4.
"This was an important win for us because it showed our players that we can successfully compete against bigger named programs," commented Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle. "We came into the game focused on the task at hand and finished strong."
This was the most extra periods that the Spiders have played since March 5, 1999 when they lost in triple overtime to East Carolina in the second round of the CAA Tournament.
Flavin led all scorers with a career-high 36 points and saw a game-high 49 minutes of action. Sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Juniors Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) and Ania Grabias (Bilgoraj, Poland) both added ten points.
Florida was led by Bernice Mosby's 20 points and 17 rebounds.
Richmond scored the game's first points but the Gators held a nine-point advantage with 14:06 remaining in the half. During an eight-minute span, Flavin scored 13 consecutive points for the Spiders. Richmond evened the score with just over five minutes remaining and held a 36-29 edge at the break.
The Spiders hit seven of their first nine shots and built a 13-point advantage with 13:14 remaining in game. The Gators hit consecutive three-point baskets to get within two points and Flavin missed two free throw attempts with 1:00 left. Twenty second later, Florida tied the score at 62-62 off a pair of free throws from Mosby and the Spiders turned the ball over on their following possession. Florida's final shot attempt was unsuccessful.
In the first overtime period, Florida scored the first two baskets but Chapman later gave the Spiders a two-point lead with a three-pointer at the 1:23 mark. Flavin missed the front-end of a pair of free throws and the Gators forced a second overtime after Tashia Morehead hit her fourth three-point basket of the day.
In the second overtime, Mosby hit one of two free throws with seven seconds remaining and evened the score for the seventh time. After a Richmond time-out, the Spiders' designated play resulted in Flavin's wide-open lay-up and the 79-77 win.
Richmond competes in Dartmouth's Blue Sky Classic after Christmas, playing host Dartmouth in the first round on December 29.
