PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a season-high 14 rebounds to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 61-54 win over La Salle University tonight at Tom Gola Arena. With the win, the Spiders improve to 10-1 while the Explorers fall even at 6-6.
In addition to her double-double, Flavin added three assists, one block and one steal. Junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) also reached double-figures with 12 points. Six other Richmond players scored in the victory and sophomore Kelly Roche (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) grabbed a career-best five rebounds.
Three players scored in double-digits for the Explorers with senior Jill Marano leading the team with 13.
La Salle scored the game's first points off a pair of free throws and held a slight 6-5 advantage at the 17:05 mark. The Spiders were unable to connect on a field goal attempt during the following four minutes and the Explorers built a seven-point lead. Flavin ended the Spiders' scoring drought off a lay-up, her first points of the game, with 13:04 on the clock. However, La Salle held onto the lead until the Spiders hit consecutive three-point baskets from Roche and juniors Chapman and Araceli Gil (Santa Barbara, Calif.) to tie the game at 22.
Over the last five minutes of the half, Richmond held onto the lead and took a 28-26 advantage at the break.
In second half action, the teams exchanged baskets throughout the first ten minutes with neither side able to take more than a three-point advantage. The Explorers claimed their final lead of the game at the 8:39 mark after two free throws.
La Salle got within a basket with two and half minutes remaining but both teams turned the ball over on their next possessions. Chapman hit her second three-point basket of the night to put the Spiders ahead by five points with just 25 seconds left in the contest. Sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
The Spiders held the advantage in rebounds, grabbing 38 to the Explorers' 35. Richmond shot .472 from the field and .462 from three-point range. Richmond continued to struggle from the free throw line, hitting just half of its attempts for the third straight game.
The Spiders host University of Dayton on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
