UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team faces Duquesne University on Thursday night in a battle for the #2 spot in the West Division of the Atlantic 10 conference. Both teams have lost five league contests and are fighting for the first-round bye in the upcoming conference tournament. The game can be heard live at www.GoDuquesne.com.
The Spiders (17-8, 8-5) are currently riding a four-game win streak, earning 20+ point victories over each of their opponents. In Richmond's last outing, a 77-49 win over Massachusetts, the Spiders recorded 23 assists and 18 steals. Junior Kate Flavin is leading the Spiders in both scoring and rebounding and nationally ranks among the Top 50 in both categories.
Duquesne (15-11, 10-5) have won their last three games, last knocking off last year's Atlantic 10 Champions and current West Division leaders George Washington 77-60 on Sunday afternoon. The Dukes are led by senior Candace Futrell who leads the conference in scoring with 21.8 points per game.
GAME NOTES
The Series
Tonight's contest marks the sixth meeting between the two schools with the Spiders holding a 4-1 advantage. The series dates to February 1, 2002, Richmond's first year in the Atlantic 10, when the Spiders recorded a 95-61 win at the Robins Center. The teams have played twice in Pittsburgh with each team winning one contest. Last season, Richmond won both regular season match-ups.
The Coaches
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her second year on the sidelines and owns a 38-19 record. She has a 3-0 record against the Dukes. Duquense head coach Dan Durkin is in his 11th year with the Dukes and has compiled a 145-160 mark during that time.
Back with a Vengeance
After a four-game slide, the Spiders have won their last four games by an average of 26.8 points. Richmond has dominated in almost every statistic in these wins, recording 57 steals to it opponents' 24 and dishing out 80 assists in comparision to 38 by the other teams.
A Rebounding Machine
Kate Flavin, the Spiders' leading rebounder, also paced the team on the glass last season. Currently, she has grabbed 5+ rebounds in 44 consecutive contests and pulled down double-digit boards on 23 of those occasions.
A First
In the Spiders' win over Massachusetts freshman Christina Campion recorded her first career double-double with ten points and 13 rebounds. Earlier in the season, Campion was rebound shy with a ten point, nine rebound performance at Dayton.
