MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - In the 15th inning freshman Josh Farkes blasted a three-run homerun to lead the University of Richmond baseball team to a 6-4 victory against Kent State, this afternoon in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Spiders' record improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Golden Flashes fall to 1-6, with the loss.
Starting on the mound for the Spiders was junior Jason Bolinski (Hockessin, Del.), he pitched 7.2 innings, allowed only two runs and six hits. Junior John Cronin (Branford, Conn.) relieved Bolinski in the eighth and freshman Rob Berzinskas (Clinton, Conn.) pitched the last three innings and was awarded the win, giving him a 2-0 record.
The Spiders got on the scoreboard early as they scored two runs from three hits in the second inning. Sophomore Andrew Justice (Henderson, N.C.) singled up the middle and senior A.J. Board (Raleigh, N.C.) followed with a single to right-center field, setting up freshman Vince Riggi (Saratoga Springs, Fla.) who stroked a double to right field, allowing Justice and Board to score.
Kent State threatened, in the fourth, loading the bases on two hits. However, Bolinski hung tough and fanned Chuck Moore to end the inning.
Richmond extended their lead to 3-0, in the eighth, when sophomore Ben Zeskind (Miami, Fla.) singled to right field, scoring Bobby LeNoir (Wilmington, Del.), who reached base on an error by the pitcher.
The Golden Flashes responded in the bottom of the eighth, with a single to center field by Joe Tucker, allowing Matt Sego to put Kent State's first run on the board. With two outs, the Flashes came within one when Tucker plated, off a single to left field by teammate Chad Kinyon. Cronin closed out the inning by striking out Chuck Moore.
In the bottom of the ninth, KSU tied the ball game at three when Emmannuel Burris doubled to left field, scoring Marshall Woods and sending the game into extra innings.
The Golden Flashes threatened in the bottom of the 12th with bases loaded and two outs, but Jim Fasano (Horsham, Pa.) caught a line drive to close out the inning.
In the 15th, LeNoir doubled to left field and was moved to third when Zeskind flew out to right field. Fasano was intentionally walked, setting up for Farkes' (Boston, Mass.) three-run homerun over the left field wall.
The Spiders return to the field later today when they face Coastal Carolina, in the final game of the Baseball at the Beach tournament, immediately following the 3 p.m. game.
