UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) scored a sudden victory goal in double-overtime to lead the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 11-10 win over #20 William & Mary at Crenshaw Field. With their second consecutive win over a nationally-ranked opponent, Richmond improves to 2-2 while the Tribe suffers their first loss of the season and fall to 2-1.
Junior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) recorded her third straight hat trick and senior Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) added three goals and one assist.
The teams exchanged scores within the game's opening minutes but Kristen Wong scored back-to-back goals for William & Mary as the Tribe took a 3-1 advantage. Senior Jen Cielwich brought the Spiders within one but scoring see-sawed for the remainder of the half and the Tribe held an 8-6 lead at the break.
Less than two minutes into the second period, Purcell's goal put the score at 8-7. William & Mary quickly responded when Colleen Dalon recorded her third goal of the game with 27:52 on the clock.
Purcell scored Richmond's next two goals and evened the game at 9-9 with just under twenty minutes remaining in the contest. Neither team was able to generate an offensive attack to break the tie.
In first overtime, a scramble in front of the William & Mary goal for the loose ball resulted in a Spider goal but the Tribe answered with a goal of their own with two minutes on the clock.
Allison Nuzzi (Baltimore, Md.) passed the ball to slashing Berlacher who was able to shoot the ball directly into the net and give Richmond the 11-10 victory.
The Spiders recorded 32 shots to the Tribes' 20.
Sophomore Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made seven saves for Richmond and Debby Petracca registered six in the net for the Tribe.
The Spiders face Old Dominion on Wednesday, March 17 at 4:00 p.m.
