Women's Basketball Charges South Florida Bulls 63-55

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team defeated South Florida 63-55 behind 19 points from sophomore Saona Chapman in the opening round of the WNIT tonight at the Robins Center. The Spiders improve to 21-9, equaling their win mark from last season, while the Bulls end their season with a 14-15 record.
Chapman led the Spiders with 19 points off a 3-4 performance from behind the three-point line. Freshman Christina Campion recorded a double-double, her fourth in six games, with a game-high 14 rebounds and 11 points. Junior Kate Flavin added an even dozen and five steals.
For the Bulls, Anedra Gilmore scored 19 points and Jessica Dickson contributed 13.
After turning the ball over on its first three possessions, Richmond settled down and held a 12-6 lead five minutes into the game. The Bulls rattled off nine unanswered points, while the Spiders missed ten consecutive shots, to take a three-point lead at the 10:10 mark.
Richmond equaled its largest lead of the half (six) off a three-point basket from Chapman with five minutes remaining but the Spiders scored just two more points in first half action and held a slight 25-23 edge at the break.
Richmond hit its first three shots, two treys and a jumper, of the second half and took a double-digit lead with less than a minute and a half gone by. At the 14:32 point, Goppert scored a fast-break lay-up to give the Spiders a 13-point edge.
The Bulls hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the deficit to eight with just under ten minutes remaining. South Florida got within five points, at the 5:47 and 1:59 marks, off three-point baskets but Chapman responded with a trey of her own with 48 seconds left.
South Florida missed their last two shots and Richmond came away with the 63-55 win.
For the second consecutive year, the Spiders advance to second round action when they host Florida State on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
