Women's Basketball Hosts Florida State in WNIT action

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spiders return to action at the Robins Center on Sunday afternoon when they host Florida State at 2 p.m. in second-round WNIT action. The game can be heard live on WXGI-AM 950 and via the internet at www.richmondspiders.com. Tickets are $5 and will ONLY be available at the door on gameday.
The Spiders (21-9) defeated South Florida 63-55 on Thursday night to advance to the second round of the WNIT for the second straight year. Sophomore Saona Chapman led the Spiders with 19 points against the Bulls and freshman Christina Campion recorded a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Florida State (15-14) is led by Tasheika Allen, who is scoring 13.4 points per game. Eight players are averaging over five points a game.
GAME NOTES
The Match-Up
The Spiders are making their second consecutive WNIT appearance, third overall appearance, and are participating in post-season play for the just the fifth time. In last year's WNIT, the Spiders recorded the program's first-ever postseason wins and advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Auburn. Florida State is also making its second straight appearance in the WNIT. Last year, the Seminoles lost to Auburn in the second round.
The Series
Today marks the second meeting between the schools with FSU holding a 1-0 advantage. On December 29, 1993, the Seminoles dealt the Spiders a 70-66 loss in the Central Florida Tournament.
The Coaches
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her second year on the sidelines and owns a 41-20 record. Boyle has never faced the Seminoles. Florida State head coach Sue Semrau is in her seventh year with the Seminoles and has compiled a 92-109 mark during that time.
Richmond and the WNIT
The Spiders are making their second consecutive appearance in the WNIT and the program's third overall appearance. Last season, Richmond advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Auburn. The Spiders earned the program's first-ever post-season wins last year with victories over Georgetown and Saint Joseph's and own an overall record of 3-4 in the tournament.
The Spiders Against the Field
Of the 32 teams, the Spiders have already played four during the regular season and are 2-4 against the field. Richmond defeated Xavier (1/5, 2/15) twice and topped Arkansas State (12/17) in a regular-season tournament but fell to both Saint Joseph's (2/1) and UNLV (11/30). In the five games, sophomore Saona Chapman led Richmond in scoring (16.2 ppg) and senior Amber Goppert led the team in rebounding (7.2 rpg).
Common Opponents
Richmond and Florida State have played two common opponents this year. The Spiders defeated the Florida by ten points whereas FSU fell by a six-point margin. Both teams defeated South Florida.
The Dynamic Duo
Either Saona Chapman lead the Spiders in eight of nine statistical catagories. Chapman ranks first in assists, three-point field goal percentage and minutes per game while Flavin leads the team in points, field goal percentage, rebounds, steals, blocks. In addition, one of the duo has been the high scorer in 24 of the 30 games. The pair has scored over 40% of Richmond's points in 20 games this year with a high of 64% against La Salle (1/25). Flavin has reached double-figures in all but three games this season.
