Women's Lacrosse Tops LaSalle 20-13

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) scored seven goals to lead the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 20-13 win over La Salle University this afternoon in Atlantic 10 conference play. The Spiders end their two-game losing streak and improve to 4-4.
Purcell scored three goals in the first half of play and added the other four in the final 11 minutes of the contest. Junior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) scored four goals and Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) recorded a hat trick.
Six different players scored the Spiders' first goals as Richmond held a 6-1 advantage twenty minutes into the contest. The Explorers scored five of the next seven goals before Richmond tallied a pair from Purcell and sophomore Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) in the final minutes of the half to set the halftime score at 10-6.
Senior Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.) opened the second half with a score before La Salle rattled of a trio of unanswered goals. Richmond scored the game's next three goals, two from Habicht and one from McGuire, to take a 14-9 lead.
Purcell scored four goals in the game's final minutes to give the Spiders the 20-13 victory.
Sophomore Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made eight saves in the net for the Spiders while Brittany Friedrich made 12 stops.
Richmond dominated in all statistical categories, doubling the Explorers in shots and draw controls and tripling them in ground balls.
The Spiders face George Washington on Friday, April 2 at 3:30 p.m. in the nation's capital.
