UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) recorded her third consecutive hat trick this afternoon but it wasn't enough as the #4 Duke women's lacrosse team defeated Richmond 12-7 at Crenshaw Field. The Spiders fall to 6-6 while the Blue Devils improve to 8-4.
In addition to Berlacher's three goals, classmate Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.) added a pair. Senior Mandy Bourquin (Lutherville, Md.) and sophomore Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) each tallied one goal.
Duke senior Meaghan Walters led the Blue Devils with six goals and six other players contributed scores.
The Spiders scored the first goal of the game when Berlacher converted the free position attempt at the 26:34 point. The teams exchanged scores throughout the following ten minutes of action before the Blue Devils scored five unanswered goals to take a 7-3 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Blue Devils held a five goal advantage after Michelle Menser scored with 23:47 left in the game. The Spiders rattled off three straight scores, two coming from Cielewich, to reduce the Blue Devils' lead to just two but Duke answered back with a trio of goals of their own. Each team scored once more to set the final margin at 12-7.
Richmond goalie Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made 11 saves while Megan Huether recorded ten stops for the Blue Devils.
The Spiders are back in action on Friday, April 16 at St. Bonaventure. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
