Duquesne Takes Women's Lacrosse In Come-From-Behind Victory

Pittsburgh, PA - The Duquesne lacrosse team improved to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 with its 12-8 come-from-behind victory over the visiting Richmond Spiders. DU was down 7-1 at the 21-minute mark and trailed 5-8 at the half before out-scoring Richmond 6-0 in the second frame to take the victory.
Richmond was led by Allison Nuzzi and Libby Berlacher with two goals each. Keeper Jackie Swansburg recorded 12 saves.
Ginger Flocco and Laura App led the game with three goals each and both notched two scored in the second frame to help secure the victory. Kelly Mulford paced DU with two assists.
Duquesne improves to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 while Richmond falls to 6-8 overall, 2-3 in A-10 play. The Dukes now stand tied for first in the Conference with Temple.
The Spiders opened the game netting a free position goal from Berlacher 1:59 in to play followed by a free position score from Polly Purcell for a 2-0 lead at nine-minutes in to the contest. Jen Lorenze (Morgantown, W. Va./Morgantown) put the Dukes on the board with an unassisted goal at 12:15 before the Spiders sprang to a 5-0 scoring drive to gain a 7-1 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining. The Dukes regrouped and followed suite with a 4-0 drive of their won with assisted goals from Flocco and App and back-to-back goals from Meredith Williams (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) for a 5-7 reach. Richmond's Nuzzi hit the back of the cage with :01 on the clock for an 8-5 lead at the half.
The Dukes out-shot Richmond 15-6 in the second half to aid in the victory, but the contest saw six minutes of scoreless play before Courtney Tamasitis scored from App for a 6-8 reach. App then hit a free position goal at 13:58 before Lorenze scored from Mulford's feed at 17:04 to tie the game 8-8. App's unassisted goal at 17:59 proved to be the game winning as DU went ahead for the first time with a 9-8 lead. Flocco netted back-to-back insurance goals in the 23rd and 29th minute before Stacie Pollock netted the final goal of the game at 29:48.
