Women's Lacrosse Holds Off American 9-7

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Freshman Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) recorded her fourth hat trick of the season to lead the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 9-7 victory over American this afternoon at Lacrosse Field. The Spiders improve to 5-5 while the Eagles fall to 5-6.
In addition to Friend's scores, junior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Morghan Vahue (Victor, N.Y.) added two goals each. Senior Jen Cielewich (Severna Park, Md.) and sophomore Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) both tallied one score.
For the Eagles, Tara Michael scored a game-high four scores with three coming in the second period.
Habicht scored the game's first goal less than one minute into the contest and Vahue added two consecutive scores to give the Spiders a 3-0 edge. Friend added her first goal of the game at the 20:06 point before American got on the scoreboard off Michael's unassisted goal.
Richmond went up 5-1 after Habicht converted a free position attempt but the Eagles got within two goals with Caitlin Gorman's pair of scores in a two minute span. Each team added an additional goal before the halftime break as the Spiders' held a 6-4 lead at the break.
The Eagles struck first in the second half and cut Richmond's lead to one with just over 25 minutes remaining in the period. McGuire answered back a minute later with a goal off the pass from Allison Nuzzi (Baltimore, Md.). Friend and Michael exchanged goals in the final twenty minutes to put the final score at 9-7.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) faced 10 shots and recorded one save. In the goal for American, Kathleen Finnegan made nine saves.
Richmond recorded 29 shots to the Eagles' 10.
The Spiders are back in action on Friday, April 9 against Massachusetts at 3:00 p.m.
