Men's Tennis Ousted From NCAA Tournament

RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team dropped its first round NCAA Tournament match to cross-town rival Virginia Commonwealth University this afternoon, 4-0, at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va. The Rams are ranked 11th in the country and snapped the Spiders six match winning streak.
VCU took the early lead as it won the two completed doubles matches at the numbers two and three positions. Juniors Derek Schwandt and Matthew Cabana competed at No. 1 doubles and had the match tied at 6-6, but were not able to finish. The Spiders then lost the first three completed singles matches, which resulted in the 4-0 decision.
Schwandt faced VCU's Arnaud Le Cluerec at No. 2 singles and fell 6-2, 6-2. Freshman Matt Stillwagon dropped his match at the number five spot and Eric Hage lost at No. 6.
The Spiders record falls to 13-14, with the loss while the Rams improve to 25-3 and move on to face Texas A&M Sunday afternoon. The team finished its season as Atlantic 10 Champions and look to return to the NCAA Tournament next season as it will lose only one senior.
