Women's Lacrosse Tops Saint Joseph's 16-7

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Seniors Polly Purcell (Ellicott City, Md.) and Libby Berlacher (Villanova, Pa.) each scored four goals to lead the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team to a 16-7 win over Saint Joseph's today at Lacrosse Field. With the win, the Spiders improve to 7-9, 3-4 in the Atlantic 10 while the Hawks fall to 8-6, 2-5 in the conference.
In her final game in a Richmond uniform, Purcell tied two program single-game marks. Her ten total points equaled Heather Gardener's high set in 1995 and her six assists matched Heather Heitz's accomplishment from the same year.
In addition, Purcell tied the program's career point high of 196 held by Heather Gardener.
In addition to Purcell and Berlacher, junior Kristen Habicht (Baltimore, Md.) and freshmen Morghan Vahue and Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) all scored a pair of goals while sophomores Caroline McGuire (Darien, Conn.) and Allison Nuzzi (Baltimore, Md.) each added one.
For the Hawks, Kerry O'Connell tallied three goals and Kristen Teklinksky and Lindsay Brown each scored two.
After ten minutes of play, the score was tied at 2-2 before the Spiders rattled off four unanswered goals to take a 6-2 halftime lead. Purcell assisted on four goals in the first half.
In the second half, Richmond tallied three goals with less than three minutes gone by on the clock to build a 9-2 advantage. The Spiders added three more before Saint Joseph's responded at the 21:11 mark.
Each team scored four more goals to give the Spiders a 16-7 win in their final regular season game of the year.
In the goal, sophomore Jackie Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.) made nine stops for Richmond while Courtney Huff and Sarah Magan split time in the net for the Hawks. Magan recorded five stops while huff made three.
