UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - University of Richmond head women's lacrosse coach Sue Murphy announced her hiring of former Spider standout Carrie Aitken as an assistant coach.
"I am thrilled to have Carrie back at Richmond. As an alum, she brings to our program the pride of being a former Richmond athlete and a wealth of experience as a two-year assistant at Colgate," Murphy commented. "I enjoyed working with her as a student-athlete and believe that she will be a great addition to our program."
Aitken spent the previous two years as an assistant with Colgate University's women's lacrosse team and in that time, she helped led the Raiders to a 23-15 overall record. Last season, Colgate claimed the Patriot League championship and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Aitken, a four-year letterwinner at Richmond, holds the program mark for career goals (137) and ranks third in career points (159). In addition, she set the mark for goals in a single season with 51 in 2002, Murphy's first season at Richmond. Aitken led the team in scoring for three consecutive seasons and was honored to the All-Atlantic team as a senior.
The Paxton, Massachusetts native earned a bachelor's degree in Sports Science from the University of Richmond in 2002.
Three-year assistant coach Barb DiArcangelo will continue working with the team in a volunteer capacity.
