LEXINGTON, Va. - Junior quarterback Stacy Tutt threw his way into the Richmond record book by tossing four touchdowns - tied for second most in a single game - and led the Spiders to a 34-7 victory against VMI before 6,245 fans at Alumni Field.
Tutt, who was 16-for-22, also recorded a career-high 233 yards, 104 of which went to junior Harry Wilson. His four touchdown passes was the most since Buster O'Brien threw for the same amount in the 1968 Tangerine Bowl against Ohio.
"We made plays today," first-year head coach Dave Clawson said after earning his first win at Richmond. "Stacy played well and that is what we need in this offense. He made great plays with his feet and arm."
The Spiders (1-1) out-gained the Keydets 394-293 to capture their first win in Lexington since 1994. Junior David Freeman also reached a career high by running for 130 yards on 16 carries (8.1 yards per carry). He tore off a 73-yard run in the second quarter that led to Richmond's third touchdown.
After the Spiders forced a three-and-out on the opening possession of the 82nd all-time meeting between these two programs, Richmond marched 79 yards on eight plays in 3:23 to take a 7-0 lead. Tutt and Wilson connected on an eight-yard score to give the visitors their first points of the season.
With 56 seconds remaining in the opening period, the Spiders went on top 14-0 when Tutt spotted Jake Schools on an inside slant for a four-yard touchdown reception. The Spiders then pounded out a 96-yard drive late in the second quarter that culminated in a six-yard touchdown by Lamont Jones to take a 20-0 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Tutt and Wilson hooked up again, this time on a 14-yard reception, to put Richmond in front 27-0. The 26-yard drive came after safety Antoine Newsome made his second career interception.
VMI (0-2) worked its way onto the scoreboard with a 16-play, 80-yard drive that took 8:13 off the second-half clock and ended on a Josh Lyles one-yard touchdown run. Lyles was the Keydets' starting quarterback because Jonathan Wilson was out with a broken ankle.
Redshirt freshman Arman Shields, who also blocked a punt in this contest, scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 12-yard score with 8:00 to play. Shields make an excellent move and broke away from the secondary after catching the ball over the middle.
Sophomore Adam Goloboski led a Spider defense that limited the Keydets to 3.86 yards per play. Junior David Gracia made six tackles, including 1.5 sacks. Junior Brian Burnette tallied double-digit stops for the second consecutive week, making 10 on the afternoon.
Richmond enters the Atlantic 10 season at Massachusetts next Saturday. The Spiders and Minutemen kick-off at 1 p.m.
