Cross Country Heads To Lou Onesty Invitational

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's and women's cross country teams hit the road for the Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., Saturday.
The Spiders will be part of a 15-team field participating at Panorama Farms, a rolling hills facility, located six miles northwest of the University of Virginia campus. The men will kickoff the event with an 8K competition at 10 a.m. The women will follow, wrapping up the event, with a 5K race at 10:45 a.m.
Junior John Ciccarelli leads the men into Charlottesville after placing second at the Spider Alumni Open two weeks ago. The South Bury, Conn., native ran the 5K race in 15:08.5 and helped Richmond top the Spider alumni team by five points. Freshman Hunter Willis, the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week following his performance at the Spider Alumni Open, will also compete in the 8K competition. Willis, a native of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., came in seventh at the Alumni Open with a time of 15:54.6, almost a full minute better than his previous best.
The Richmond women will look for another great performance this weekend after sweeping the Spider Alumni Open's two duals. Sophomore Amanda Russell, who picked up A-10 Female Performer of the Week honors Sept. 6, paced the Spiders with a first-place finish in the 2 mile race (11:04.8). Freshman Kate Merrill and junior Nicole Kurtain will also be counted on Saturday. Merrill, who competed unattached, finished second at the Alumni Open with a time of 11:16.4 and Kurtain was not far behind in third with a 2 mile time of 11:22.7.
