Cross Country Runs Well At Lou Onesty

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Amanda Russell led all Spiders with a fourth place finish in today's Lou Onesty Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The Richmond women, led by Russell's performance, finished third in the 5K race at Panorama Farms. Richmond's men, led by junior John Ciccarelli's fifth place effort in the 8K, took home seventh place in the team standings.
In the 5K competition Virginia finished with a team-best 33 points to take the title, followed by Virginia Tech (56) in second and Richmond in third with 68 points. Liberty garnered 119 points for fourth, while William and Mary rounded out the top five with 131.
On the men's side, William and Mary garnered 46 points to top second place Ohio State (50) by the slim margin of four. Virginia took third with 62 team points and was followed by Virginia Tech (121) in fourth. Liberty rounded out the 8K Top-5 with a total of 166 points.
Richmond's women had two runners in the Top-10 and five among the Top-25 as Russell led the way with a 5k time of 18:33.4 for fourth place. Junior Nicole Kurtain earned a spot at No. 7 with a time of 18:47.0. Three Spiders came in 20th-22nd, including freshmen Shelby Faircloth (20th - 19:26.6), Kylee Schuler (21st - 19:29.0) and sophomore Nicole Erby (22nd - 19:33.8). Junior Diana Morse came in 35th with a time of 19:56.0. Sophomore Caitlin Smyth was not far behind in 37th with a time of 20:07.3. Freshman Diane Kenaston came in 48th running a 5K time of 20:28.8
Ciccarelli finished among the Top-5 for the second consecutive time this season. The South Bury, Conn., native finished fifth with a time of 25:11.6 after coming in second two weeks ago at the Spider Alumni Open. Freshman Hunter Willis, an Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after his performance two weeks ago, finished in 52nd-place overall. His 8K time of 27:06.7 was second-best on the day for Richmond. Freshman Jonathan Molz earned 57th-place with a time of 27:11.6. Senior Pat Barkhuff (27:23.0) came in 62nd, while freshman Peter Norquist finished 77th with a time of 28:04.6. Sophomore Brian Gildea ran a time of 28:17.9 for 79th-place and freshman Brendan Regan rounded out the Spider runners with a time of 30:19.7 for a finish of 100th.
Richmond's next action takes place next Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa., at the Paul Short Invitational. The first of two races is set to begin at 10 a.m.
