UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team topped Towson, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field to rebound from its first loss yesterday to No. 13 American. The victory over the Tigers moved the Spiders to 6-1 on the season, while Towson dropped to 2-6.
Richmond opened the game with its first goal in the 11th minute when freshman Shannon Taylor got a rebound off a corner to put the Spiders ahead 1-0. Six minutes later sophomore Amanda Florio recorded her third goal of the season to move Richmond's total to 2-0.
The Spiders ended their scoring flury midway through the first half when junior Whitney Wells connected with Florio for goal at the 17:09 mark. Richmond went on to outshoot the Tigers 11-2 in the first half.
Towson came alive in the second half when Ashley Bell netted two goals off corners with a seven-minute frame. The charge was not enough as the Spiders hung on to the 3-2 advantage.
The Spiders have the entire week off before travelling to Norfolk, Va., Friday, Sept. 24 to face seventh-ranked Old Dominion. Game time is set for 7 p.m..
