UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - A total of five Spider student-athletes were recognized by the Atlantic 10 Conference today as a result of their play in last week's competition in cross country, field hockey and women's soccer.
Sophomore Amanda Russell was selected as the Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week, and junior John Ciccarelli garnered Men's Cross Country Performer of the Week honors. Freshman Carrie Holland, a member of the Spider women's soccer team, picked up both Player and Rookie of the Week honors for her efforts in the Spiders' upset of No. 7 Tennessee last Thursday. Sophomore Amanda Florio earned Player of the Week recognition, and freshman Shannon Taylor was awarded her second-consecutive Rookie of the Week honor in field hockey.
Russell (North Bay, Ontario) took home fourth place at the Lou Onesty Invitational Saturday in Charlottesville, Va., with a 5k time of 18:33.4. The Top-5 finish was her second consecutive of the season after garnering the top spot at the Richmond Alumni Open, Sept. 4. Russell, who led the race through the 1.8 mile mark, earned Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honors two weeks ago after her win.
Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.) finished the 8k competition at the Lou Onesty Invitational with a time of 25:11.6 to earn fifth place. He led through the three mile mark and went on to finish behind three runners who qualified for last season's NCAA Championships. Ciccarelli's fifth-place finish is his second-consecutive Top-5 placing after coming in second at the Richmond Alumni Open two weeks ago.
Holland (Pittsfield, Mass.) earned her second Rookie of the Week honor and first Player of the Week award after leading the Spiders to a 1-0 win over seventh-ranked Tennessee last week. Holland paced the team with three shots and scored her first collegiate goal with less than one minute remaining in the first half. She has appeared in all six contests, starting three, and currently ranks second on the team with two goals.
Florio (Flemington, N.J.) recorded three points over the Spider's three contest last week. She garnered Richmond's second goal and assisted on the game-winner in Sunday's win over Towson. The sophomore also attempted one shot, on goal, in the win over 10th-ranked Virginia last Wednesday.
Taylor (Midlothian, Va.) picked up her second-consecutive Rookie of the Week honor after sending home the game-winner against No. 10 Virginia last week. The goal, with five minutes remaining in the game, was the first game-winner of her career and her third goal this season.
