Russell and Merrill Earn Atlantic 10 Accolades

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Three Richmond student-athletes were recognized by the Atlantic 10 Conference today as a result of their play in last week's competition in Cross Country and Field Hockey.
Sophomore Amanda Russell was selected as the Women's Cross Country Performer of the Week for the second consecutive week. Freshman Kate Merrill earned Women's Cross Country Co-Rookie of the Week honors, and junior Allie Howard earned Player of the Week recognition in field hockey.
Russell (North Bay, Ontario) finished 25th at the Paul Short Invitational Saturday in Bethlehem, Pa., with a 6k time of 21:39.4 The Top-25 finish was her third consecutive of the season after garnering first and fourth place in Richmond's previous two events. Russell, who has been honored by the A-10 three times this season, has led Richmond in each of its three meets.
Merrill (Durham, N.C.) finished the 6k competition at the Paul Short Invitational with a time of 22:10.1 to earn 50th place in the 175-person field. Merrill, who competed in only her second race of the season, helped the Spiders to an eighth-place finish.
Howard (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded three points in the Spiders' two contests last week. She garnered the team's second goal and assisted on the game-winner, helping Richmond beat James Madison for the first time in 12 years. The junior also attempted one shot in the Spiders' loss at eighth-ranked Old Dominion Friday. Howard now ranks fourth on the team with three goals and has recorded two assists.
