#25 Women's Basketball Falls to Temple 82-62

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Behind a career-high performance from junior Candice Dupree (Tampa, Fla.), the Temple women's basketball team defeated #25 University of Richmond 82-62 this afternoon at the Robins Center. The Owls stay undefeated in conference action (7-0) and improve to 15-3 while the Spiders drop their second straight contest and fall to 14-3, 5-2 in the Atlantic 10.
With the loss, the Spiders' 13 game home win streak, the nation's fourth longest active streak, comes to an end.
Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) tallied a team-high 20 points for the Spiders and junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) added 16. Chapman also grabbed six rebounds and recorded four assists.
Dupree scored 31 points, going 14-20 from the field, and grabbed 12 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season.
Richmond scored seven points before Temple got on the scoreboard with their first of six three-point baskets at the 17:50 point. The Owls outscored the Spiders seven to one over the following four minutes and took their first lead (11-10) with another three-point basket. Richmond tallied the contest's next nine points and held their largest lead (19-11) with just under 12 minutes remaining.
The Owls responded, evening the score at 25, and then built an 11-point advantage at the three minute mark. Dupree hit a pair of free throws to end the half and the Owls held a 43-33 advantage at the break.
In second half action, the Spiders cut into the deficit and got within four points after a series of missed shots and turnovers from the Owls. Temple hit a three-pointer on its next possession and went on a 24-7 scoring run to take a 23-point lead with just under five minutes remaining. During that span, the Spiders missed ten shots and committed four turnovers and three fouls. Temple maintained a 20+ point lead for the duration of the game and left the Robins Center with the 82-62 win.
Richmond shot under .400 for just the second time this season and recorded an equal number of assists and turnovers (8). The Spiders grabbed more offensive than defensive rebounds for the first time this season (16-15).
Richmond faces Duquesne on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Pittsburgh, Pa.
