Spiders Earn Win Over UMass, 67-63

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) - Jamaal Scott scored 19 points, including the go-ahead basket with just over a minute remaining, to lead Richmond past Massachusetts, 67-63, on Saturday.
Scott's layup with 1:15 left broke a 63-63 tie. Daon Merritt sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 5.9 seconds left for Richmond (9-9, 4-3 Atlantic 10).
Maurice Maxwell had 18 points and Anthony Anderson added 12 for UMass.
Massachusetts (10-8, 4-4 Atlantic 10) had three chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute, but Anderson missed three free throws with 42 seconds remaining, Maxwell missed a put-back on Anderson's third miss and Art Bowers' 3-point attempt glanced off the rim.
Merritt finished with 13 points for Richmond which led by as many as 11 points in the second half before UMass made a run and tied the game at 50-all with 6:34 left.
The lead changed hands six times down the stretch, before Scott's layup put the Spiders ahead for good.
UMass jumped out to an early 24-11 lead, but Richmond went on a 22-2 run, including a stretch when they held UMass scoreless for more than seven minutes, and led 33-26 at halftime.
NOTES: By capturing their first win in Amherst, Richmond improved to 4-1 all-time against UMass ... The Spiders are now 7-0 overall, 4-0 in A-10 action, when leading at halftime ... Richmond was in front 33-26 at the break ... Scott's 19 was a season high ... The Spiders were out-rebounded for the ninth consecutive contest ... Richmond matched its season low for three-pointers in a loss (4) ... They also made four at Seton Hall.
