Women's Basketball Downs Flyers 65-57

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Kate Flavin (Englewood, Colo.) recorded her second consecutive double-double to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 65-57 win over Dayton tonight at the Robins Center. The Spiders win their second consecutive league game and improve to 11-1, 2-0 in the Atlantic 10 while the Flyers fall to 6-7, 0-2 in the conference.
Flavin tallied 22 points and grabbed a season-high 19 rebounds while connecting on 12-of-14 free throw attempts. Junior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) and sophomore Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) both scored 11 points in the win.
Dayton was led by sophomore Katie Butler's 18 points off a 3-5 performance from behind the three-point line. In addition, freshman Brittany Holterman scored 11 points.
Richmond held a small advantage throughout the first seven minutes before Dayton evened the score at 11 off a pair of free throws at the 13:19 point. Two minutes later, the Flyers built a double-figure lead from a three-point basket from Butler. Richmond outscored Dayton 18-12 throughout the remainder of the half and cut the deficit to four (33-29) at the break.
The Spiders retook the lead just a minute and half into the second half and had built a ten-point lead at the 14:04 mark. Richmond took its largest lead of the game (17) with just under ten minutes remaining after junior Amber Petillon (Brick, N.J.) hit one of two free throws.
Dayton reduced the deficit to single-figures with five minutes left in the game but could get no closer than eight points as the Spiders held on for the 65-57 win.
Richmond outrebounded Dayton, the conference leader, 43-36.
The Spiders travel to Olean, N.Y. to face St. Bonaventure on Sunday in a noon contest.
