UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's basketball team will be playing at least 10 games on television in 2005-06, including five appearances on the three-time Emmy-winning Atlantic 10 Network.
The Spiders, who open practice Friday, play four games on the Comcast Sports Network, two on CN8, along with appearances on WHAS-TV, FSN-South and FSN-Ohio. More television games could be added throughout the season.
Richmond will play both of its meetings with Charlotte and George Washington on the Atlantic 10 Television Network and Comcast Sports Network. A trip to Saint Joseph's on Feb. 25 will also air on the Atlantic 10 Television Network. The Spiders home game against Virginia and the short road trip downtown at VCU will both be on CN-8. Home games against Wake Forest and Xavier will be aired by Fox Sports Net, while the game at Louisville will be on the ABC affiliate in Louisville.
Richmond's game time against Arkansas State on Dec. 3 in the University of Louisville's Colonial Classic has been changed to 3:30 p.m., while the Dec. 5 tip-off with Louisville has been moved up to 7:00 p.m. to accommodate television.
All the times on the 2005-06 schedule are subject to change, and the Tulane game scheduled for Dec. 27 in New Orleans, La. will be played, but the site and time are yet to be determined.
Including eight home Atlantic 10 contests, the Spiders are scheduled for 16 regular-season home dates - which equals the second-most in Robins Center history. The 1981-82 slate included 17 home games, while 16 regular season games were played on the home court in 2001-02. Including the non-conference schedule, Richmond will now face eight teams which went to postseason play last year, five in the NCAA Tournament (Louisville, Wake Forest, Old Dominion, George Washington, Charlotte) and three NIT participants (Saint Joseph's, Temple, Virginia Commonwealth).
Under the new format for the 14-team, one division, Atlantic 10, Richmond will play home-and-home series with three teams: George Washington, Charlotte and St. Bonaventure. In addition to those three teams, the Spiders will host La Salle, Dayton, Saint Louis, Xavier and Massachusetts and travel to Duquesne, Rhode Island, Fordham, Temple and Saint Joseph's. The 13-game non-conference schedule includes two teams from the Big East (Louisville and Seton Hall) and two from the ACC (Wake Forest and Virginia). Richmond will play six in-state opponents with home games against Virginia, Old Dominion, William & Mary, Hampton and Longwood, along with a short road trip downtown to play Virginia Commonwealth.
Richmond returns leading scorer and rebounder Kevin Steenberge, who averaged 12.6 points and 6.0 boards per game last season. Fellow senior Jermaine Bucknor, who played with the Canadian National Team this summer, is also back after averaging 10.7 points and 5.6 rebounds.
First-year head coach Chris Mooney comes to Richmond from Air Force, where he led the Falcons to an 18-12 record in 2004-05, the second best mark in school history. Mooney's team led the nation in fewest points allowed (54.3) and was second in the country in fewest turnovers (9.8). They also set the school record for three-pointers made in a season with 266. Richmond has made the postseason in four of the past five seasons, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2004.
