Field Hockey Runs Conference Win Streak To 30 At West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Richmond Spider Field Hockey team shutout West Chester Sunday, 9-0, in Atlantic 10 action. Behind hat tricks from senior Whitney Wells and freshman Alex Malatesta, the Spiders extended their A-10 win streak to 30 games. Richmond, which logged its second nine-goal game this season, moved to 11-5 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while the Golden Rams fell to 8-8 and 1-5 in the A-10.
The Spiders wasted little time taking lead, as Wells posted the first goal of the game at the 42 second mark. Malatesta then added two goals to the total in the 13th and 14th minute. Wells had her second of the day in the 16th minute, as both of her goals came by way of assists from junior Jodi Murphy. With five minutes to play in the first half, freshman Erica Suitch garnered her second goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Erin Arthur. Arthur then notched her own goal on a penalty corner, as the assist went to senior Lesley Russell in the 35th minute of play.
Richmond, which outshot West Chester 16-0 in the first half, upped its lead to 7-0 in the 52nd minute of play when Wells scored her third of the game. Malatesta was not far behind, scoring her third in the 54th minute. Freshman Hana Qugana put the finishing touches on the contest when she scored her first career goal in the 62nd minute of play. Senior Allie Howard provided the assist on Qugana's goal.
The Spiders gave up three shots in the second half, but freshman Becca Weaver turned all three away for her first career shutout, and the Spiders' sixth of the season.
Richmond's next action comes Wednesday, Oct. 26, when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., to face Virginia at 5 p.m. Next weekend the Spiders get back on the road for the their 2005 regular season finale in St. Louis, Mo., against the Saint Louis Billikens.
