UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Spider field hockey team fell one spot to No. 20 in the most recent STX/NFHCA National Coaches Top-20, Oct. 4. The Spiders broke into the Top-20 two weeks ago at No. 16, and were at No. 19 in last week's poll release.
The Spiders, who finished the 2004 season ranked 10th in the country, were one spot out of the Top-20 in the poll's 2005 debut. After topping then-ranked No. 18 William & Mary, 2-1, Sept. 18, the Spiders jumped six spots to No. 16.
After the then-ranked No. 16 Spiders dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 19 James Madison and a 5-2 loss to No. 7 Old Dominion, Richmond dropped to No. 19. This past weekend, Richmond led current No. 1 and three-time defending champions Wake Forest, 2-1, at halftime before falling 4-2 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The Spiders (5-5) open Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday, Oct. 7, by hosting UMass at 3 p.m. at Crenshaw Field. Richmond has won 19-straight regular season conference games dating back to the 2001 season. Head coach Ange Bradley's squad also has a 24-game win streak against A-10 opponents, including tournament contests, which dates back to the 2002 season.
