No. 20 Field Hockey Topples UMass, 4-1

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The 20th-ranked Richmond Spider field hockey squad topped the Massachusetts Minutewomen, 4-1, Friday at Crenshaw Field to move to 6-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference. UMass dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-1 in the A-10 with the loss. The Spiders have now won 20-straight Atlantic 10 regular season games dating back to the 2001 season, and 25-straight games, including A-10 Tournament play, dating back to the 2002 season.
For the second time in as many games, the Spiders notched a penalty-corner goal with no time left on the clock in the first half. Richmond was awarded its fifth penalty corner of the game with nine second to go in the first half. The team could not capitalize, but was awarded a second penalty attempt with no time left on the clock. Senior Emma Bradley blasted a shot from the right side off a pass from sophomore Shannon Taylor. Senior Whitney Wells was inside, and got a stick on it to redirect it past UMass keeper Becky Letourneau.
After the halftime break the Minutewomen got on the board, evening the score at 1-1. Patricia Borneo took a rebound off an initial penalty-corner shot and got it past senior Michelle Swartz in goal.
Senior Shannon Taylor and assisted by Michelle La Force. Howard then added her second of the game and third of the season at the 54:29 mark. Senior Colleen Wevodau took the initial shot, and Howard was there for a redirection.
The Spiders outshot UMass 26-9 and got a total of nine corners on the afternoon. Swartz ended the contest with seven saves on eight shots faced.
Richmond will return to Crenshaw Field, Sunday, Oct. 9 for its second A-10 contest. The Spiders welcome Rhode Island (5-6, 0-1) which is coming off a 2-1 loss at Saint Louis Friday evening. Game time is set for noon.
