CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell to Boston College 62-51 in the second round of the Pre-Season WNIT at Silvio O. Conte Forum in Chestnut Hill, Mass. on Sunday afternoon. Junior forward Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J.) led the Spiders with 20 points in the match against the Eagles.
The Spiders enjoyed their only lead of the game at the 19:45 mark when Campion sunk a jumper. The Eagles responded 30 seconds later as Aja Parham made a lay-up to tie the game at two.
Richmond tied the game up three times in the half, but Boston College pulled away at 10:21 and went up by as many as 15 points with 22 seconds remaining in the half. Richmond senior guard Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn.) stole the ball and made a lay-up in the last four seconds of the half to cut the Eagles' lead to 13 going into halftime with Richmond trailing 29-16.
Fans saw a completely different Spider team on the court in the second half, when the Spiders improved their field goal shooting percentage from 28% to 48.3%. Campion came out strong for the Spiders, scoring the first six points of the half for Richmond and making all four of her free throws, and ending the game with a total of 20 points. Although the Spiders outscored the Eagles 35-33 in the second half, it was too late and just not enough to overcome the Eagles' lead.
Chapman followed Campion with 11 points, and led the Spiders in assists (four), steals (three), and rebounds (three). Chapman was joined by freshman guard Sarah Williams (Wilmington, Del.) who also tallied three steals, while junior Kelly Roche (Wappinger Falls, N.Y.) and freshman Whitney Morrow (South Portland, Maine) also recorded three rebounds each for the Spiders.
Richmond head coach Michael Shafer was impressed with the Eagles' aggressiveness, especially under the basket. "They out-rebounded us on our own boards. They got 17 under our basket and we only got 16."
Shafer attributes a lot of the Spiders' mistakes and troubles to playing so early in the season, but is still optimistic about the season. "We have a new coach, a new system, and new players," stated Shafer. "This tournament gave us some good experience and it was nice to have the girls play against other people. Everything will come with time."
Leading Boston College with a double-double was Brooke Queenan with 20 points and 11 rebounds. With the victory, Boston college improves to a 2-0 record and will advance to the semi-finals of the WNIT where they will face-up to the winner of the Connecticut vs. Indiana State game.
The Spiders return to action this Friday night at James Madison University at 7:00.
