Women's Basketball Goes Head-To-Head With City-Rival VCU

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team will travel across town for a match-up with city-rival and former CAA rival Virginia Commonwealth on Wed., Nov. 30 at 5:00 p.m. at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The Spiders, now 2-3, are looking to extend their six-game winning streak over the Rams as they face them for the 82nd time in the program's history.
The Spiders enter Wednesday's game fresh off a split 1-1 performance in California, where they enjoyed a 61-55 victory over the UC-Santa Barbara Gauchos before falling 59-51 to the Long Beach State 49ers Saturday afternoon at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif. Senior guard Araceli Gil paced the Spiders at Long Beach with 12 points, while junior forward Christina Campion recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Senior guard Saona Chapman led Richmond to its first on-the-road victory with 21 points at UC-Santa Barbara, while sophomore forward Mirna Mazic recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Campion pulled 12 rebounds off the board for the Spiders, as Gil thrilled a large, rooting section of family and friends in her hometown with five assists and six steals.
The Spiders are currently led by Campion (12.4 ppg), who has scored in double-figures in four of the Spiders' five games, and Chapman (12.2. ppg), who has reached double-digits in three games this season. Campion also leads the team in rebounding (6.4 rpg) and Chapman also paces the Spiders in assists, averaging 5.8 per game.
The Rams, now 3-0 after wins over Loyola (65-62), Toledo (71-50), and Howard (89-66), are led by sophomore forward Krystal Vaughn coming off the bench with 16.7 ppg, sophomore guard LaKea Jones (10.7 ppg) and freshman center Quanitra Hollingsworth (12.0 rpg). The Rams recorded an 11-18 overall record last year, finishing eighth in the CAA with a 6-12 record. VCU is looking to remain undefeated with Wednesday's game as it hopes for its fourth consecutive victory of the season.
The Spiders and the Rams have faced up 80 times since their first meeting in 1940. The Spiders currently lead the Richmond-VCU series 47-34 and have not lost to the Rams since March 1, 2000 when the Spiders fell 79-72 to the Rams at VCU. Last year, the Spiders topped the Rams 76-67 at the Siegel Center, where former Spider standout Kate Flavin recorded a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Chapman and Campion were also in double-digits for the Spiders with 22 points and 13 points, respectively.
Following Wednesday's contest, the Spiders will host the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday afternoon at the Robins Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
