KINGSTON, R.I. - Sophomore DeUnna Hendrix hit her first three-point basket of the season to lead the University of Richmond women's basketball team to a 49-46 win over Rhode Island tonight.
Hendrix hit the three-pointer with 5.6 seconds on the clock to give Richmond (18-4, 9-2 Atlantic 10) the lead for good. The Rams (5-17, 3-8 Atlantic 10) quickly advanced the ball to half-court and called timeout with 2.9 seconds to play. Safi Mojidi was found open for the game-tying three, but her shot hit off the front rim as the buzzer sounded.
Peta Kneen led Rhode Island with 15 points, hitting all three of URI's three-pointers for the game. Junior Tanya Rhodes added 11 points and seven rebounds including a jump shot that put the Rams up 40-38 with 5:09 left in the game. Two free throws from Mojidi extended the lead to 42-38 with 4:22 left, but Richmond would not quit.
With 55 seconds on the clock, sophomore Kelly Roche blocked Peta Kneen's three-point attempt and Richmond gained control of the ball.
The Spiders fought back and took a 46-44 lead with 50 seconds to go on a lay-up by Kate Flavin, off the same play that Richmond used to defeat Florida in double overtime earlier in the season, but Kneen answered on a lay-up of her own with 41 seconds.
Flavin scored 12 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Spiders in both categories.
URI scored 19 points off of 24 Richmond turnovers as the Spiders struggled to get their offense going against Rhode Island's pressure defense.
