UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team plays its final two games of the regular season this weekend as the Spiders face Xavier and Dayton in Ohio. Richmond battles Xavier for a first-round bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Championships on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. while the Spiders and Dayton play at noon on Sunday on A-10 TV. Friday night's game will be broadcast live in Richmond on WRNL 910 AM and via the internet at www.richmondspiders.com while Sunday's contest will be available on the internet.
Richmond (20-5, 11-3) posted its third consecutive 20+ win season after defeating Massachusetts last Sunday afternoon. The victory over the Minutewomen marked the eighth time this season that the Spiders have limited their opponent to 50 points or less.
If the Spiders defeat Xavier, they will guarantee themselves a first-round bye in the Atlantic 10 Championships.
Xavier (17-8, 11-3) fell to George Washington in overtime last Sunday in their only overtime game of the season. Junior Tara Boothe, who scored a career-high 34 points in the team's last meeting, leads the Atlantic 10 in scoring with 19.7 per contest.
In early February, Richmond topped Xavier 72-65 at the Robins Center. Richmond's Kate Flavin led the Spiders with 27 points.
Dayton (11-14, 5-9) has lost its last two games and has compiled a 4-6 record when playing at home. Junior Cara Wright leads the Flyers with 11.6 points per game.
In the teams' first meeting, the Spiders earned a 65-57 win over the Flyers at the beginning on January. Three Richmond players scored in double-figures with Flavin recording a double-double with 22 points and 19 rebounds.
GAME NOTES
THE MATCH-UP
The Spiders face Xavier on a Friday night in a battle for a first-round bye in the upcoming conference championships. On Sunday, Richmond plays Dayton in an Atlantic 10 TV contest.
THE SERIES
Xavier and Richmond are meeting for the eighth time with the Spiders holding a 6-1 advantage. Richmond has a perfect 3-0 mark when playing at the Cintas Center. The Spiders and Flyers have played seven times in the past and Richmond leads the series 5-2. Richmond has played both teams two times each year since joining the Atlantic 10. The Spiders have never met either team in the Atlantic 10 Championships.
THE COACHES
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her third year with the Spiders and has posted a 65-25 mark during that time. She is 3-1 against the Musketeers and 3-1 against the Flyers. Xavier head coach Kevin McGuff is in his third year and has compiled a 54-31 record. Dayton head coach Jim Jabir is in his second year and owns a 14-39 mark with the Flyers. Now in his 18th year as a head coach, he has a career mark of 234-262.
LAST TIME OUT
The Spiders opened their three-game road trip with a 55-43 win over Massachusetts on Sunday afternoon. Junior Saona Chapman led the team with 15 points, with a 3-5 performance from behind the three-point line. Sophomore DeUnna Hendrix grabbed a career-best eight rebounds in the win.
FROM BEYOND THE ARC
The Spiders have hit at least one three-point field goal in all but one game this year. The only game that the Spiders failed to hit a trey was at Virginia (11/27). Richmond has connected on 5+ three-point baskets in 11 games this year.
CRASHING THE BOARDS
Richmond has outrebounded it opponents in 18 games this year and has grabbed 10+ more rebounds than its opponents in six games. Against both Sacred Heart (12/18) and Saint Joseph's (1/30), the Spiders grabbed 16 more rebounds than their opponents. In the seven games where they recorded less rebounds, they were only outrebounded by an average of four. In 11 games this year, Richmond has recorded 40+ rebounds and it pulled down 49 rebounds in back-to-back wins against Sacred Heart (12/18) and Florida (12/21).
