UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Spring is just around the corner and the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team opens the 2005 season on Tuesday, March 1 when it hosts #7 Maryland at 3:00 p.m. The Spiders change home venues this year as they will play their home contests at First Market Stadium on the Richmond campus.
Richmond (0-0) lost just four players from last year's squad that finished with an overall mark of 7-9, 3-4 in the conference. Senior Kristen Habicht is the Spiders' leading returning scorer after ranking third on the team in goals last year with 30.
In voting conducted among the Atlantic 10's head coaches, the Spiders were picked to finish third in the league.
#7 Maryland (0-1) opened its season on Friday afternoon with a 10-7 loss to #4 Duke. Three Maryland players, Delia Cox, Greta Sommers and Acacia Walker, were named to Preseason All-America teams by Inside Lacrosse.
The teams have met 11 times in the past and the Terrapins have won every meeting. The series dates to 1968 and last year, #2 Maryland recorded a 16-6 win in both teams' first game of the season.
