UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - In a battle for the top-spot in the Atlantic 10 West Division, the University of Richmond women's basketball team hosts Xavier University on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The game can be heard live on the internet at www.richmondspiders.com and can be followed via Gametracker.
The Spiders (16-4, 7-2) played their final non-conference game of the season last Wednesday night as they suffered a 79-63 loss at Virginia Tech. Richmond posted a 7-2 mark during the month of January but fell in their first contest in February.
Xavier (14-6, 8-1) opened the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule with a 7-0 mark before falling to Temple on a last-second basket. Junior Tara Boothe leads the league in scoring with 18.5 points per contest and also ranks among the Top 10 in rebounding with 7.6 per outing.
GAME NOTES
THE MATCH-UP
Richmond faces Xavier today at the Robins Center as the two teams battle for the top spot in the Atlantic 10 West Division. The Spiders have lost just two conference games while Xavier has only lost one. The Musketeers opened the league schedule with a perfect 7-0 mark.
THE SERIES
Today marks the seventh meeting between the two teams with the Spiders holding a 5-1 advantage. Richmond has won the last three contests and is 2-1 against the Musketeers at the Robins Center. The team's first meeting occured on January 20, 2002 when the Spiders defeated Xavier 93-73 in their first year of conference competition. The squads have only played during the regular season and have never met in the conference tournament.
THE COACHES
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her third year with the Spiders and has posted a 61-24 mark during that time. She is 3-1 against the Musekteers. Xavier head coach Kevin McGuff is in his third year at Xavier and has compiled a 51-29 record in that time.
LAST TIME OUT
In their final non-conference game of the season, the Spiders suffered a 79-63 loss at Virginia Tech. Junior Saona Chapman led the team with 17 points and a team-high seven points. Senior Kate Flavin and junior Amber Petillon also scored in double-figures with 12 and ten points, respectively.
OVERTAKING THE COACH
Saona Chapman and Araceli Gil are both currently ranked sixth in career three-point baskets with 111. Richmond assistant coach Ginny Doyle ranks fifth with 112, connecting on 61 in the 1991-92 season and 51 during the 1990-91 year.
