UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Four Richmond student-athletes, junior Brooke Boncher and freshman Jessica Witt, both of the women's swimming and diving squad, senior Joe Mallory of the track and field team and freshman tennis player Doug Banker, earned recognition from the Atlantic 10 Conference office Monday.
Boncher was named the A-10 Swimming Performer of the Week for the second-consecutive week and fifth time this season following her four-win performance in Saturday's 161-139 win over Navy. The West Newbury, Mass., native broke three individual pool records (50 free, 100 fly and the 100 free) and helped the Spiders' 400 free relay break a pool record. Boncher, who also won the 100 back event, has now captured 15 straight event wins dating back to Jan. 26 against George Washington.
Witt earned her third A-10 Swimming Rookie of the Week honor due to her outstanding performance Saturday in Annapolis, Md. The Fullerton, Calif., native won the 200 back event with a time of 2:07.21 and later placed second in both the 200 fly (2:09.68) and the 200 IM (2:07.81). Witt's time in the 200 IM helped her move into sixth all-time on Spiders' record book
Mallory, a defensive back for the Spider football program last fall, was named the A-10 Men's Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Week after breaking the 31-year-old Richmond triple jump record Saturday at the Liberty Record Bash in Lynchburg, Va. The Montpelier, Va., native recorded a mark of 47-03.00, eclipsing the old mark of 46-07.50 set by Nathan Taylor in 1974. Mallory's jump also set a new facility record in Liberty's Tolsma Track Center.
Banker earned his first Rookie of the Week honor after recording three singles victories over the weekend. Banker was the only Spider to win his singles match against #61 Old Dominion (6-3, 6-3) on Friday. He also earned a 6-4, 6-2 singles win at the #3 position against UNC-Greensboro on Sunday after winning at #4 singles against Davidson on Saturday. In addition, he picked up an 8-6 doubles win against Davidson at the #3 spot.
