Women's Basketball Travels to Rhode Island

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond women's basketball team battles Rhode Island on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. in Kingston, R.I. The game will be broadcast live on SportsRadio 910 AM in Richmond and worldwide via www.richmondspiders.com.
The Spiders (17-4, 8-2 A-10) are currently tied with Xavier for first place in the Atlantic 10 West Division after topping the Musketeers 72-65 on Sunday afternoon. Kate Flavin scored 27 points in the win and currently ranks second in the conference in both scoring (17.8) and rebounding (8.8).
Richmond ranks first in the conference in three statistical categories (scoring offense, field goal percentage and scoring margin) and is among the Top 5 in 15 categories.
The Rams (5-16, 3-7) have lost their past three games by a total of ten points and are currently tied for third in the conference's East Division with three other teams. Rhode Island ranks second in the conference in steals with 11.2 per game. Peta Kneen leads three Ram players that are averaging double-figures in the point column with 14.8.
THE MATCH-UP
The Spiders look to hold onto their top spot in the Atlantic 10 West Division as they face Rhode Island tonight. Richmond has won its last three conference games. Rhode Island has won just three conference games all year and has lost its last three games. The Rams have won two games at the Ryan Center this year.
THE SERIES
Tonight marks the sixth meeting between the two schools with the Spiders holding a slight 3-2 advantage. The teams first played on December 28, 1991 when the Rams participated in the University of Richmond Invitational and the Spiders earned a 86-54 win in the opening round. In the Spiders' first two years of conference competition, Rhode Island won both regular season meetings. Last season, Richmond won the regular season match-up and defeated the Rams in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Championships.
THE COACHES
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle is in her third year with the Spiders and has posted a 62-24 mark during that time. She is 2-1 against the Rams. Rhode Island head coach Tom Garrick is in his second year at Rhode Island and has compiled a 16-26 mark during that time. Garrick served as acting head coach for 21 games last season.
LAST TIME OUT
Richmond moved into a tie for first place in the Atlantic 10 West Division with its win over Xavier. Kate Flavin scored 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Araceli Gil hit five free throws in the final 40 seconds to hold on for the win.
